Pianivu

From middle C to the printed page.

Pianivu is a piano course for Android that listens while you play and marks every note. Play on the keyboard on your screen, on your own piano through the phone's microphone, or on a MIDI keyboard over USB or Bluetooth.

The first four bars of Ode to Joy on a treble staff above two octaves of piano keys. One note in the second bar and its key, E above middle C, are marked in red.
Ode to Joy, bar two. Red marks the note to play now and the key that plays it.

Six units, from finding the keys to playing with both hands.

Each lesson takes under ten minutes and every unit ends with a piece you play from the score. Nothing is locked: the app marks the lesson to take next, and if you already read a little music you can skip ahead.

Bring a piano, or don't.

Whatever you play on, Pianivu checks each note against the score and tells you whether it was right, wrong, early or late. At the end you see the bars that went wrong, and one tap starts a loop on just those bars.

Wait mode holds the score until you find the right key. You can slow any piece to 40% of its tempo, practise each hand on its own and count in with the metronome.

The keyboard on your screen
Two octaves at a time, sized for a phone and scrollable, with real piano sound. You can take the whole course this way, on the sofa or on a train.
Your own piano
Acoustic or digital. Stand the phone on the music rest and play; Pianivu listens through the microphone.
A MIDI keyboard
Connect it with a USB cable or pair it over Bluetooth. Each key you press goes straight to the app, so nothing needs to be heard.

What it costs.

Ads pay for Pianivu. You see at most one, after you finish a lesson or a piece, and no more than one every ten minutes. Never while you play, never while the microphone is listening, and never between a missed attempt and your retry.

Questions people ask first.

Anything else: write to pianivu@toolsvu.com.

Do I need a piano?
No. The keyboard on the screen covers the whole course. A real piano or a MIDI keyboard makes it feel like the real thing, and you can switch at any time.
What happens to the sound from my microphone?
It is analysed on your phone to recognise the notes. It never leaves the phone and is not stored.
Is there pop music?
No. Pop songs come with licence fees, and in other apps that is what ends up behind a paywall. Pianivu keeps to classical and traditional music so every piece stays free.
Where is my progress kept?
On your phone. There is no account. If Android backup is on, your progress is included in your phone's backup. Privacy policy
Who is it for?
Teens and adults starting from zero or coming back after years away, and people who play by ear and want to read notes.
Which phones does it run on?
Android 8.0 or newer.

Every lesson is free. Start with middle C.
